Painted by Surrealist Salvador Dali at the end of his Freudian phase, and foreshadowing his scientific phase, it has been speculated that the clocks themselves are a visual interpretation of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, "depicting gravity distorting time." The background cliffs and setting represent Dali’s home in Spain.
