Originally painted with oils on canvas in 1902 by Monet while he stared in Vienna, Austria, “A Pathway in Monet’s Garden Givervy” depicts Monet’s favorite subject matter, his garden. In this painting, a softly worn direct path cuts through the surrounding flower beds that are filled with brightly colored red and pink flowers. Overhead, a large number of trees lean over the garden, providing shade and framing the image. At the end of the path, stands a small cottage.
After marrying Ernest Hoschede’s wife, Alice, the two traveled across Europe to find a home for themselves and Monet’s first wife’s (Camille) children. The two settled down in the countryside of a small town called Giverny, just outside of Paris in France. During this time, Monet painted numerous images of his beloved garden and home where he felt that he had finally found peace and true serenity.
