Description:
The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Hopper transforms the dark interior of a movie theater into a study of light and makes use of many sources and intensities of illumination throughout the painting. The area around the usherette is most defined, and the brightness from the wall fixature highlights the gold of her hair and delineates the contours of her body. Given such prominence within the composition, her relative status may be inferred.
Hopper enjoyed the escape of a good movie, and in the 1930s there were many movie theaters in New York from which to chose. As in his theater paintings, Hopper focuses his attention on the spectators. The sparseness of the audience indicates that the time of day is early afternoon, an-off hour for the movies. The young usherette is perhaps daydreaming, as she indeed must have seen this film many times before. Ironically, her own thoughts, not those suggested by the movie screen, have transported her to a different place. The isolation of this usherette in her setting is quite similar in sentiment to Edouard Manet's "A Bar at the Folies-Bergere".
