Description:
Despite its superficial appearance of wild abandon, this is a painting whose composition and color scheme were arranged far from spontaneously. Three distinct horizontal color bands emerge as a stabilizing overall design, which is then dominated by a splurge of complementary blues, yellows, and oranges. The visual impact of the whole is quite striking and owes much to Gauguin. His notions of the painting as an autonomous object, entirely separate from its subject, was taken up by his friend with some enthusiasm but not completely embraced.
For all Van Gogh's insistence on his bold, free flowing marks being independent entities from their equivalents in the natural world, they still remain strongly rooted in reality. The three loosely rendered willow trees, for example, may emphasize their primary status as paint applied directly to canvas, but their progressively diminishing sizes contradicts this assertion of flatness with palpable suggestion of receding perspective. It is precisely this dynamic contradiction, which also epitomized Van Gogh's and Gauguin's relationship, that lends the image such tension and energy.
