Known in his native Spain as the "Painter of the Light of the South," Royo conveys the visual essence of Valencia and the Mediterranean in his dramatic, impressionistic canvases. Since 1989, he has developed a mature style using sweeping brush strokes, bursts of color and heavy impasto. These works include his "homages to the female form," where a distinct influence from Renoir is evident.
Royo's father, a prominent physician and avid art enthusiast, employed private tutors to instruct his son in drawing, painting and sculpture. He entered the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia when he was fourteen, and at age eighteen continued his artistic studies with Aldolfo Ferrer Amblat, Chairman of Art Studies at the Academy.
During the 1960's and 70's he created theater sets and graphic illustration, and participated in several competitions and exhibitions. With the positive reception of his work in Madrid, Royo received commissions to paint the royal portraits of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. He received subsequent commissions to paint the Judges of the High Magistrate and the Court of Justice as well as prominent Spanish political and society figures. Today his paintings, limited editions and posters are highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
