Victor Levasseur (Born 1800 – Died 1870) was born in France. He was a cartographer widely known for his unique decorative style. Levasseur produced many maps mainly admired for the data surrounding the map and artistic content of the scenes than for the detail of the map. That doesn’t mean the maps are not detailed; in fact, he was very keen in whatever he was doing. His work has appeared in museums and galleries across the country as well as in many publications. He’s an award-winning cartographer. Much of his work was influenced by his childhood and by the places he had visited and the people he had interacted with. He got inspiration from critics and the feedback he received from his clients and viewers. Levasseur used art is a means through which he communicated to his viewers what he considered to be the best representation of the surface of the earth.
That’s why he strived to keep everything simple as he believed that complicating things could interfere with the intended message. His work is available in many options and they adorn many spaces around the globe. Levasseur’s art in general have caused a lot of excitement among cartographers and art collectors. Some collectors have placed a high price tag on them due to their great demand. His pieces of art have been exhibited in many juried shows. Levasseur was one of the artists who considered art as a means of escape from the chaotic world. The moment he got immersed in his work, everything else took the back seat.
